The Happening

Posted in movies, review at 11:49 pm by Salah

Most of us already know who is M. Night Shyamalan, and if you didn’t know who is this guy, then at least you’ve seen one of his great movies; the sixth sense, unbreakable, the village. All these movies were a big hit for it’s unique spookiness and surprising, mouth-dropping endings.

The happening is another movie he did, and it’s also a mystery and suspense movie. The movie started ok, and it kept going fine, untill you realize that there is something wrong with the story. It’s about some kind of strange air wave that hits people and as a result those people would start killing themselves with no hesitation.

It’s really cool right? Not so much when the movie just ends up giving no reason for what was going on. Shyamalan depended on the fact that not everything is explainable, and somethings will just remain mysterious. Honestly tis reasoning might have worked o a different plot, but not for this movie.

You’ll get everything you probably want from Shyamalan’s talent in this movie except for the twisted ending. Of course let’s not forget that Mark Wahlberg is starring in this movie, which gave it a good side.

The first few minutes of the happening, when it starts to “happen”, were good but then the movie goes into one big blackhole. Even three stars is so much for it.

Well since there was good acting and directing I can’t give it a very low rating; maybe if I wanted to stab the movie and twist a knife in its guts I would give it 2.5/5. The sense of horror and mystery is definitely there, and it seems that the movie does have its audience, so I thought the 3 stars would be fair for it.
